Google Business Profile Name Rules: What You Can and Cannot Use
The short answer
Your business name on Google must be the same name that is on your shop sign.
Nothing else goes in that box. Not your city. Not your services. Not “24 Hours”. Not “Pvt Ltd” unless the sign says it.
Every rule below comes from Google’s own policy page, including the examples.
- Check your name in 10 seconds
- The one rule behind everything
- The full list of what is banned
- Three things people get wrong
- If you have more than one branch
- Doctors, franchises and departments
- How to change your name safely
- Do keyword names actually work?
- If your profile gets suspended
- Stop others changing your name
- Common questions
Check your name in 10 seconds
| Is this in your name? | Example | Verdict | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| A service word that is not on your sign | Sharma Dental Best Dentist Jaipur | Remove | Add it as a category instead |
| Your city, not on your sign | Kumar Plumbing Manchester | Remove | Your address already shows this |
| Your city, and it is on your sign | Paws & Claws Vets Lucknow | Keep | Fine. Keep a photo of the sign |
| “near”, “at”, “in”, “opposite” | CakeTime Bakery near City Mall | Remove | These words describe, they do not name |
| A phone number | Airport Taxi 9999-000000 | Remove | It has its own box |
| A website address | CakeTime caketime.xyz | Remove | It has its own box |
| Opening hours | Regal Pizza Open 24 Hours | Remove | It has its own box |
| ALL CAPITAL LETTERS | BEST HAIR SALON | Fix case | Write it as “Best Hair Salon” |
| Emoji or exclamation marks | Glow Salon!!! ✂ | Remove | Google can suspend you for this |
| ® or ™ | Sharma Dental® | Remove | Never allowed, even if you own the mark |
| A branch number | The Print Shop 042 | Remove | Store codes are banned |
| Pvt Ltd, LLC or Inc, on paper only | Kumar Plumbing Pvt Ltd | Remove | Nobody calls you that in real life |
| Pvt Ltd or LLC, and it is on your sign | Kumar Plumbing Pvt Ltd | Keep | Allowed if you can show a photo |
| & or / that is part of the real name | Paws & Claws Vets | Keep | Fine when the sign shows it |
| “inside” another business | Glow Salon (inside Metro Mall) | Remove | Not allowed, even if true |
| Two brands with a slash | Cafe Mocha / Juice Bar | Split | Pick one, or make two profiles |
| The same name in two scripts | Chai Point / चाय पॉइंट | Remove one | Banned even if the sign shows both |
| A slogan | Glow Salon Where Beauty Begins | Remove | Slogans are banned |
| Dr., MD, JD or Esq. | Dr. Sarah Chen, DDS | Keep | Titles and degrees are allowed |
The italic part is the bit causing the problem.
Nothing in that table matches your name?
Then your name is almost certainly fine. Two things are still worth checking. If you have more than one branch, see branch naming. And anyone can change your name without telling you, so see how to protect it.
The one rule behind everything
Every other rule comes from that one. So when you are not sure, ask yourself one question.
If yes, you can keep it. If no, take it out.
Here is Google’s own example. A coffee shop in San Francisco called Shelly’s Coffee, open all night:
| Box in your profile | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Business name | Shelly’s Coffee. Nothing else. |
| Address | 3247 Poppy Street, San Francisco |
| Hours | Open 24 hours |
| Category | Coffee shop |
Look at what that shows you. “24 hours” is true, but it goes in the hours box. “San Francisco” is true, but it goes in the address box. “Coffee” is true, but it goes in the category box.
The full list of what is banned
| You cannot use | Not allowed | Allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Slogans | TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank | TD Bank |
| Store codes | The UPS Store – 2872 | The UPS Store |
| ® and ™ | Burger King® | Burger King |
| ALL CAPS | SUBWAY | Subway, KFC, IHOP |
| Opening hours | Regal Pizzeria Open 24 hours | Regal Pizzeria |
| Phone numbers and web addresses | Airport Direct 1-888-557-8953 | Airport Direct |
| Symbols and legal words | Re/Max, LLC LAZ Parking Ltd | Re/Max, LAZ Parking H&M, T.J.Maxx |
| Services and products | Midas Auto Service Experts | Midas |
| Directions and landmarks | Holiday Inn (I-93 at Exit 2) Equinox near SOHO | Holiday Inn Salem Equinox SOHO |
| “inside” another shop | Geek Squad (inside Best Buy) | Geek Squad |
| The same name twice in two scripts | Kafiex / カフィエクス | Kafiex |
Checked against Google’s policy in August 2026. Google changes this page now and then, so check it once a year.
The capitals rule surprises people. “SUBWAY” is not allowed, even though their own logo is in capitals. Write it as “Subway”. Capitals are fine only when the letters are real initials, like KFC or IHOP.
Three things people get wrong
1. Pvt Ltd, LLC and symbols like &
Google removes these by default. But their policy says you can keep them if you can show proof: a photo of your sign, a business card, or an invoice with the name on it.
That is why H&M and T.J.Maxx are allowed. Those symbols are part of the real name.
2. Your city or area
You can use a place name, but only if it is genuinely part of your name. Google’s own examples show the line clearly.
| Name | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday Inn (I-93 at Exit 2) | No | These are directions |
| Holiday Inn Salem | Yes | This is the branch’s real name |
| Equinox near SOHO | No | “near” makes it a description |
| Equinox SOHO | Yes | This is what the branch is called |
The giveaway is small words. “near”, “at”, “in”, “opposite”, “behind”. If one of those is in your name, you are describing where you are, not saying who you are.
3. Two languages
You cannot write your name twice in two scripts. Google gives “Kafiex / カフィエクス” as an example of what is not allowed.
This is the only rule where your sign does not save you. Google says the ban applies even when the shopfront shows both.
If you have more than one branch
This is the rule that breaks quietly. One manager adds their town. A franchise partner uses a slightly different spelling. Someone drops “The”. A year later you have forty versions of one name.
Kumar Plumbing Manchester
Kumar Plumbing LtdThree versions of one brand across three branches.
Kumar Plumbing
Kumar PlumbingThe same name everywhere.
Two exceptions Google allows
- A separate sub-brand. “Walmart Supercenter” and “Walmart Express” can differ, as long as every shop of that type uses the same name.
- A branch that genuinely trades under another name. KFC is called “PFK” in Quebec, so those shops use PFK.
Check your categories at the same time. Google wants those to match across branches too. They drift for the same reason names do: someone edits one profile and nobody notices.
Past about ten branches you cannot check this by hand. Brand consistency checks flag branches that have drifted, and bulk editing lets you fix them all at once instead of opening forty profiles.
Doctors, franchises and departments
You are a doctor, dentist, lawyer or agent
You can use your title or degree. Dr., MD, JD, Esq. and CFA are all fine. What changes is whether the company name goes with it.
| Your situation | Name it like this |
|---|---|
| You are one of several doctors at a clinic | Your name only. Not the clinic’s. Dr. Sarah Chen, DDS The clinic gets its own separate profile. |
| You are the only one at a branded office | Company name, colon, your name. Allstate: Joe Miller |
| You run your own practice | Your practice name, as it is on the sign. |
- One profile per person, not one per speciality. A doctor who does three things gets one profile.
- Staff do not get profiles. Neither do sales agents working for a company.
Good news for clinics. A five-partner practice can have six profiles. One for the clinic, one for each partner. That is allowed and it helps you show up more often.
Two brands in one shop
You cannot join them with a slash. “KFC / Taco Bell” is not allowed. Pick one, or make a separate profile for each if they run independently.
There is one exception. If you are an official dealer or franchisee of a brand, you can use that brand name. “U-Haul Neighborhood Dealer” is allowed.
A department inside a bigger business
A department can have its own profile, but only if it is genuinely separate. It needs a different name from the main business and a different main category.
- Allowed: Walmart Vision Center, Sears Auto Center
- Not allowed: the Apple section inside Best Buy, the hot food counter inside a supermarket
If you cannot give it a different category, it is not a separate department.
How to change your name safely
| Type of change | Google’s test | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Small change | The main words and your category stay the same | You rename it in place. You keep your reviews. |
| Big change | Anything more than that | You must close the old profile and start a new one. Your reviews stay on the old one. |
Work out which one you have before you touch anything. Years of reviews are at risk here, and they do not move across.
Do it in this order
Change the real world first
New sign, new website, new bills. Google checks your name against the real world. If you change Google first, you are submitting a name that nothing else backs up.
Take photos
The new sign, your website header, a business card, a recent bill. Name changes often get reviewed by a person, and this is what settles it.
Change it in your profile
Type it exactly as the sign reads. No extra words.
Update everywhere else
Your website, your social pages, and every directory you are listed on. If those still show the old name, Google sees a mismatch. Citation management handles the directory side.
Check back in a few weeks
Names can get changed back without warning. See protecting your name.
Do keyword names actually work?
The problem is what it costs you later.
- Google now spots it on its own. You no longer need a competitor to report you.
- Reporting takes two minutes. Any rival can file a complaint with a photo of your real sign.
- The downside is much bigger than the upside. You gain a few positions. You risk losing the whole profile.
- Most of the time it just gets changed back, quietly, and you may not notice for weeks.
If you want to know where you really stand before deciding, run a free rank check. It shows your position across your whole area, not one flattering number.
If your profile gets suspended
- 1. Find the problem. Check your name against the table at the top. It is usually obvious once you look.
- 2. Fix the name so it matches your sign exactly.
- 3. Gather proof. A photo of your shop front, your registration papers, a bill with your address, and your website showing the same name.
- 4. Send the appeal through Google’s reinstatement form. Say what was wrong and what you fixed.
- 5. Wait. Do not send it again and again. That slows things down.
Two things worth knowing first. Suspensions are not always about the name, so check your address and categories too before you appeal. And there are two kinds. A soft suspension leaves your profile visible but you cannot edit it. A hard suspension removes you from Maps completely. A free profile audit finds problems in other boxes before you appeal.
Stop others changing your name
- Google allows public edits by design. Some of them apply automatically.
- Rivals can report you if your name breaks a rule. One more reason to keep it clean.
- Quiet changes are the usual problem. With one shop you might spot it. With forty, you will not.
This is what profile protection is for. It tells you when your name or other details change instead of leaving you to notice.
Reporting a rival with a stuffed name
- Use Google’s Business Redressal Complaint Form, or suggest an edit on their profile for something simple.
- Say which rule they broke. “Service words in the name” works better than “this is spam”.
- Add a photo of their real shop sign. That is the strongest proof you can send.
- Be patient. Some reports go nowhere. Enforcement is not consistent.
A fair word on this. Reporting is allowed and Google built the form on purpose. But a rival breaking the rules is usually beating you on one thing while losing on others, like reviews and posting. Report them if you want, but do not make it your plan.
