Open rates

Why open rates are not what they seem.

Since 2021, Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads email images on its own. That counts as an “open”, even if nobody read the email.

Open rate on the same emails

Brevo, 175,000+ customers, 2025 data.

Including Apple’s automatic opens33.87%
Without Apple’s automatic opens20.73%

A 13.14 point gap on the same emails. The click rate is not affected, which is why clicks are the better number to watch.

Apple Mail now accounts for 62.26% of tracked opens, according to Litmus (July 2026, over 1 billion opens). Litmus estimates Apple’s privacy feature affects about 55% to 60% of all email opens. Omeda measured the total open rate jumping from 22.6% to 40.5% across about 2 billion emails after the feature launched.

It also broke device data. Before the change, in May 2021, Litmus measured 49.7% of opens on mobile. After it, the tool could no longer tell which device most opens came from. So be careful with any exact “share of emails opened on mobile” figure from after 2021.

Benchmarks

Open and click rate benchmarks.

Each benchmark comes from one email company’s own customers. They measure different kinds of senders, so do not average them.

SourceData yearOpen rateClick rateAdjusts for Apple?

Constant ContactEarly 202630.8%not givenNo
GetResponse202339.64%3.25%No
MailchimpDecember 202335.63%2.62%No

There is no single “average open rate” for 2026. These range from 20.73% to 43.46%, mostly because of how opens are counted and who the customers are. Click rates are much closer together, from 0.74% to 3.25%, because Apple’s feature does not change them.

Local businesses

Open rates for local business types.

Constant Contact published open rates by industry for early 2026. It is one of the few sources that covers local and service businesses.

Constant Contact does not share the sample size, and these rates include Apple’s automatic opens.

A simple email every local business should send: a thank you with a link to leave a Google review. Our review automation tool sends these by email or SMS, and review management software helps you reply. See our local SEO statistics for why reviews matter.
Inbox placement

Most email tools report about 98.5% as “delivered”, because only about 1.5% of emails bounce. But delivered does not mean inbox. Spam placement nearly doubled during 2024, from 4.5% in the first quarter to 8.6% in the last.

SPF, DKIM and DMARC are settings that prove an email really comes from your domain. Your email provider or web host can help you set them up. Red Sift found DMARC use rose from 8.62% to about 13.38% of domains in 2024, so most domains still do not have it.

Treat 0.30% as the danger line, not a goal. Klaviyo says healthy spam complaint rates are below 0.01%.

ROI

What email marketing earns.

ROI means return on investment: how much you earn for each amount you spend.

You may see “$36 for every $1” and “$42 for every $1”. Both come from Litmus surveys, in 2020 and 2019. They are marketers’ own estimates. In the same survey, 45% said they measured email ROI poorly or not at all. So treat these as rough guides.

The newest single average comes from the DMA Marketer Email Tracker 2026: about £41 for every £1, from a survey of 250 UK marketers.

Automation

Automated emails earn the most.

Automated emails are sent by a trigger, like a new signup or an item left in a cart. Omnisend studied 27 billion emails from 150,000 brands in 2025.

Two things to keep in mind. Automated emails go out at moments when people are already keen to buy, so part of their success is timing. And more people unsubscribe from automations: 0.59%, against 0.20% for campaigns.

Timing

Send time and subject lines.

Omnisend looked at about 26 billion emails. The gap between the best and worst day of the week was only about 1.6 percentage points. That is smaller than the 13.14 point effect of Apple’s privacy feature. So pick your send day based on your goals, and do not worry too much about it.

44.14%

Share of all clicks that happen in the first hour. About 85% of clicks happen within 24 hours.

What this means: Most people act on an email the day it arrives, or never.

With the person’s name35.78%2.11%

With emoji37.5%3.32%

In this large dataset, subject lines with the person’s name did not do better. Only 9.67% of senders used them, so this does not prove names hurt. GetResponse suggests adding a personal touch in the email body instead.

SMS

Email compared with SMS.

Omnisend compared both on the same platform: 27,000+ brands and 246 million+ SMS campaign sends in 2025.

Campaign click rate0.74%12.39%
Automated message click rate4.66%20.34%
Revenue per campaign message$0.155$0.15
Revenue per automated message$2.87 to $3.41$0.75

SMS gets far more clicks per message. Email earns about 4 times more per automated message. Many local businesses use both: SMS for quick reminders and review requests, email for longer updates. Note that SMS open rates cannot be measured reliably, so compare clicks. Postscript measured SMS click rates of 2.87% to 8.01% across 17,000+ online stores, lower than Omnisend, because the stores and click definitions differ.

2026 dataSurvey

There is very little public test data showing how much AI improves email results. One Klaviyo figure shows emails with AI product suggestions getting a 3.75% click rate against a 1.69% average, but without a proper comparison group. Until better tests exist, judge AI by your own results.

Putting the numbers to work

What to do with these numbers.

6 steps for better email results.

1. Track clicks, sales and inbox placement

Apple inflates open rates by 13.14 points. Click rates are more reliable, and usually sit between 0.74% and 3.25%.

2. Check that you reach the inbox

Only 83.5% of marketing email reached the inbox in 2024. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and test where your emails land.

3. Keep spam complaints very low

Google and Yahoo filter at 0.30%, but healthy senders stay below 0.01%. Only email people who asked to hear from you, and make unsubscribing easy.

4. Set up automated emails first

Automations are 2% of sends but 30% of revenue. Start with a welcome email and a thank you email.

5. Send when people can act

44.14% of clicks happen in the first hour. Send when your customers are likely to be free to act.

6. Ask for reviews by email or SMS

A simple thank you message with a review link helps your local ranking. Our review automation tool does it for you.

FAQs

Email marketing statistics, answered.

What is a good email open rate in 2026?

There is no single answer. Benchmarks range from 20.73% to 43.46%, depending on the company and whether Apple’s automatic opens are counted. Brevo found 20.73% without them and 33.87% with them on the same emails.
