Market size

How big online shopping is.

The US Census Bureau surveys about 10,800 retail firms every quarter. This is official, measured data.

US online retail, April to June 2026Figure
Sales (seasonally adjusted)$340.2 billion
Growth on a year earlier+12.2%
Growth on the quarter before+3.8%, the strongest in 5 quarters
Share of all US retail sales17.1%, up from 16.3% a year earlier
All US retail sales$1,986.5 billion, up 6.7%

Why do some articles say 16% and others 17% for the same quarter? “Seasonally adjusted” figures smooth out normal busy and quiet months. Adjusted, online sales were $340.2 billion and 17.1% of retail. Not adjusted, they were $329.5 billion and 16.4%. Both are correct. Just say which one you use.

World totals, like $6.88 trillion for 2026, are forecasts made by research firms, not measurements. Use them as estimates.
