Concept

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

MCP is an open standard that lets AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT securely connect to outside apps like GBPPromote. It creates a controlled, authorised link so the AI assistant can read selected information from your account.

In practice, MCP defines three things:

  • What data the AI is allowed to access
  • Which actions are permitted
  • How the connection stays secure, authorised from your own account and revocable at any time

For local SEO, this means your GBPPromote rankings, reviews, and profile data can be used directly inside an AI conversation, with no copy-pasting between dashboards.

Overview

How GBPPromote’s MCP integration works

Once connected, the AI pulls live data on demand. Instead of opening different sections of the dashboard, you work straight from chat. Common things you can do:

Analyse rankings

Geo-grid map rank, share of voice, and weak keywords by location.

Compare competitors

See visibility gaps against the rivals you already track.

Review insights

Rating trends, unanswered reviews, and reputation risks.

Profile health

Audit summaries and what to fix first to climb.

Client reports

Plain-language local SEO summaries, written from live data.

Action plans

Build a 30-day plan or a client meeting brief in seconds.

Nothing new to learn. The integration reads the same data you already see in GBPPromote. It just lets your AI assistant reason over it for you.

Requirements

Before you start

You’ll need:

  • An active GBPPromote account with access to Settings → AI Connector
  • A Claude account, adding a custom connector may require being an organisation owner or on an eligible plan
  • And / or a ChatGPT account where you can enable Developer mode for connectors

Good to know: current limitations. MCP is focused on reading and analysis. Publishing posts, replying to reviews, and editing your Google Business Profile are still done inside the GBPPromote app. Connectors in ChatGPT are also still experimental and may need a page refresh during setup.

Step 1 · In GBPPromote

Create your connection

Everything starts in GBPPromote. You create one connection, copy the URL it generates for your account, and that single URL is what you paste into Claude or ChatGPT. It takes about 30 seconds.

GBPPromote→ Settings→ AI Connector→ Create Connection→ Create→ Copy the URL
1

Open Settings → AI Connector

Log in to GBPPromote, open Settings, then select AI Connector from the settings menu.

2

Click Create Connection

On the AI Connector screen, click Create Connection. A popup opens asking you to confirm the new connection.

3

Click Create in the popup

Click Create. GBPPromote generates a connection for your account and displays its server URL.

4

Copy the URL

Copy the URL shown on screen. This is the only value you’ll need in Claude and ChatGPT, so keep it somewhere safe and treat it like a password. It authorises access to your GBPPromote data.

You only need to do this once. The same connection URL can be used in Claude, in ChatGPT, or in both. To revoke access, delete the connection from the same AI Connector screen.

Step 2 · In Claude

Connect GBP with Claude

With the URL copied, adding GBPPromote to Claude takes a couple of minutes.

1

Open Claude’s connector settings

Log in to Claude, open Settings → Connectors, then scroll to the bottom of the list.

2

Click Add custom connector

Click Add custom connector to open the connector dialog. Only an organisation owner can add one. If you don’t see the option, ask your workspace owner. What the connector can actually see depends on which profiles sit in your GBPPromote account. You can add or remove GBP profiles before you wire this up.

3

Paste your details

Fill in the two fields below, then click Add. Leave the optional OAuth Client ID and Client Secret fields empty. Your GBPPromote connection URL already carries the authorisation.

1NameGBPPromote
2Remote MCP server URLpaste your copied URL
4

Authorise the connection

Claude will ask you to connect. Approve the request and GBPPromote appears in your connectors list with its tools enabled.

5

Start using it in chat

Open a new chat, check that GBPPromote is switched on in the tools menu, and ask your first question, for example, “List all my locations and their average map rank.” There are more in the example prompts below.

Step 3 · In ChatGPT

Connect GBP with ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects through a developer-mode connector. You enable developer mode once, then add the same connection URL you created in GBPPromote.

1

Open ChatGPT Settings

In ChatGPT, click your profile icon and open Settings.

2

Go to Apps & Connectors → Advanced

Select Apps & Connectors, then open Advanced settings.

3

Enable Developer mode

Turn on Developer mode. It’s required before ChatGPT will accept an external MCP connector.

4

Create a connector

Go back to Apps & Connectors and click Create to add a new connector.

5

Paste your details

Fill in the fields with your GBPPromote connection URL, tick the box confirming you trust the connector, then click Create.

1NameGBPPromote
2MCP server URLpaste your copied URL
3AuthenticationNo authentication
6

Enable it in chat

GBPPromote now appears under Settings → Apps & Connectors. In a new chat, open the composer’s + menu and switch GBPPromote on before you start asking questions.

If the page glitches while you’re setting this up, refresh and repeat the step. Connectors are still experimental in ChatGPT, and your developer-mode setting stays saved.

Usage

Example prompts to try

These pull live data straight from your GBPPromote account, locations, geo-grid scans, search terms, reviews, competitors, and performance:

List all my locations and rank them by average map position.
Run a local SEO audit for [location] and tell me what to fix first.
Show the geo-grid scan for “[keyword]” in [location] and how it’s trended.
Which tracked keywords moved up or down in the latest scan?
What search terms are customers using to find [location]?
Summarise my reviews and list any unanswered or 1–2 star ones.
Compare [location] with its competitors and show where they’re ahead.
What changed on my competitors’ profiles recently?
Show this period’s calls, clicks, and impressions vs the last period.
Where are my citation gaps, and which directories should I add?
Build a 30-day action plan for [location].
Prep a client meeting brief for [location] with wins and risks.

Tip: name the specific location and timeframe in your prompt. The more precise the question, the sharper the analysis.

Help

Troubleshooting & FAQ

The connector won’t connect

Check that you pasted the full URL exactly as GBPPromote generated it, with no trailing space and the https:// prefix intact. If it still fails, go back to Settings → AI Connector, create a fresh connection, and paste the new URL.

I don’t see “Add custom connector” in Claude

Adding custom connectors is limited to the organisation owner and may depend on your Claude plan. Ask your workspace owner to add it, or confirm your plan supports custom connectors.

ChatGPT glitched while adding the connector

Connectors in ChatGPT are still experimental. If the page misbehaves during setup, refresh and repeat the steps. Your developer-mode setting stays enabled.

Do I need a separate connection for Claude and ChatGPT?

No. One connection URL works in both. Create it once in GBPPromote and paste the same URL wherever you need it.

Is my GBPPromote data secure?

Yes. The connection is created from inside your own account and only exposes the data you’ve authorised. Treat the URL like a password, and delete the connection in Settings → AI Connector whenever you want to revoke access.

Can the AI edit my profile, post, or reply to reviews?

The MCP integration is focused on reading and analysis. Publishing posts, replying to reviews, and editing your Google Business Profile are still done inside the GBPPromote app.
