Forecasts

How big is the world ad market?

Three well-known companies made forecasts for 2026. Their answers are about $250 billion apart, because they count different things.

Forecaster2026 world figureGrowthWhat it counts
dentsu (May 2026)$1.06 trillion+5.0%What advertisers spend, in 56 markets
WPP Media (June 2026)$1.3 trillion+8.9%What media owners earn from ads, on a wider base
WARC (March 2026)$1.32 trillion+10.4%What media owners earn, counting even more channels
A simple rule: every ad spend number should say 3 things. Which country or region, whether it is digital only or all advertising, and whether it is real or a forecast. Most confusion comes from leaving one of these out.

The forecasters agree on one thing. A few giant companies get most of the money. WARC expects Alphabet (Google), Amazon and Meta to take 58% of world ad revenue in 2026. WPP Media puts the top 3 sellers at 57.6%.

Measured

US digital ad revenue in 2025.

This comes from the IAB and PwC report, which has run since 1996. It adds up revenue reported by the companies selling the ads.

Social media grew 3 times faster than search. Programmatic ads, which are bought automatically by software, are now about 55% of all US internet ad revenue.

Advertising with online creators reached $37 billion in 2025, and is expected to reach $44 billion in 2026. US podcast advertising passed $2.86 billion, up 17.6%.

India

India: one of the fastest moving markets.

India moved from mostly print and TV advertising to mostly digital in under 10 years.

India, 2025 (measured)Figure
Digital advertising revenue₹947 billion, up 26%. About 63% of all advertising
Total advertising revenue₹1.5 trillion, up 13.5%. 0.41% of the economy (GDP)
Whole media and entertainment sector₹2.78 trillion, up 9%
Ads on shopping sites and at checkout₹220 billion, up 50%
Spend by small and local advertisers₹363 billion

Another report by dentsu and e4m measures the market a little differently. It puts digital at ₹71,621 crore, or 59% of Indian ad spend. Digital was only 12% in 2016. Inside digital, social takes 29%, online video 28%, paid search 23% and display 16%. Ads on shopping platforms grew 55.86% to ₹17,601 crore.

Indian forecasts for 2026 differ a lot: Pitch Madison says ₹1,74,605 crore, dentsu and e4m say ₹1,30,416 crore, and WPP Media says ₹2,01,891 crore. The gap comes from whether they count influencer marketing and shopping site ads. exchange4media compares all 3.

For Indian local businesses: ₹363 billion was spent by small and local advertisers in 2025. With so much spend moving online, a complete Google Business Profile and good reviews are the cheapest way to stand out. See our local SEO statistics for how customers choose.

Putting the numbers to work

What to do with these numbers.

6 practical steps.

1. Always say if a number is real or a forecast

If you put a market size in a report, label it. $294.6 billion measured and $1.06 trillion forecast are very different kinds of fact.

2. Follow growth, not size

Social grew 32.6% and video 25.4%, while search grew 11%. Put effort where people are moving.

3. Build AI skills, not just AI subscriptions

Companies put 15.3% of budget into AI, but only 30% feel ready to use it well. Training and simple processes make the difference.

4. Use local data for local markets

In India, digital is already 59% to 63% of ad spend. Global averages can hide how fast your own market moves.

5. Plan for the same team doing more

Staff growth halved and training budgets fell. Tools that save time matter, like our local SEO tools for managing profiles, posts and reviews in one place.

6. Check the date on every statistic

Market sizes change every year. Use the newest report, and say which year it covers.
