Google Tests Gray Shaded Search Ads and Local Pack

Google is currently testing a new design that shows a light gray background behind search ads, sponsored results, and even the local pack. This small visual change makes it easier for users to see the difference between paid listings and organic results. It also helps people understand which results are sponsored and which ones are completely free.

Although Google has not confirmed the purpose of this test, it clearly looks like an effort to make ads more noticeable. Some users have started seeing this new layout, while others still see the regular design. At the moment, the test does not appear for everyone, so the rollout is very limited.

This new experiment was first noticed by Darren Shaw. He shared screenshots on LinkedIn that show the gray shading behind ads and local pack results:

Additionally, Thomas Eccel also spotted the same layout and shared his experience here:

Overall, it looks like Google is experimenting with clearer visual separation in search results. If this test becomes permanent, it may help users quickly understand which listings are sponsored and which are organic.
