Google Maps Introduces Reviewer Nicknames, Trending Places & Insider Tips

Google has rolled out new updates to Google Maps, and these features can change how people explore local places. According to Google’s announcement, users will now see reviewer nicknames, trending locations in the explore tab, and helpful insider tips before visiting a place.

Reviewer Nicknames

The biggest update is the option for reviewers to use nicknames instead of their real names. Google explained, “If you prefer not to use your real name, now you can choose a nickname and profile picture to be associated with your reviews.”

This feature gives users more privacy, but it may also raise concerns for local businesses. When people use their real names, they usually write honest and professional reviews. However, with nicknames, things might get tricky because no one can easily identify who wrote what.

Google added, “And do not worry about Grinches trying to spoil the fun: Our built-in protections still monitor for suspicious and fake reviews 24/7, since no matter what nickname you use publicly, reviews are still associated with your Google Account behind the scenes.”

Still, many business owners feel unsure because Google’s review protections have not always worked perfectly. So it is smart to stay alert and be prepared for possible negative or suspicious reviews.

Google Maps also updated the explore tab. Now users can swipe up to see trending and popular restaurants, activities, and attractions around them. You will also find curated lists created by trusted sources and well-known local influencers.

Trusted sources include:

  • Viator
  • Lonely Planet
  • OpenTable

Additionally, Google is featuring influencers like Sisterssnacking to make local recommendations more enjoyable.

Insider Tips: Know Before You Go

The next update is a new “insider” section called know before you go. This feature gives users helpful tips before they visit a place. It shows parking advice, special menu items, booking tips, entrance details, and more.

These insights are powered by Gemini, which scans user reviews and online information to highlight the most useful details. This makes it easier for people to make quick decisions before stepping out.
