Google Maps is becoming much more than a tool for finding directions. Google has announced a major update to Ask Maps, bringing new agentic AI capabilities that can help users complete real-world tasks directly through Google Maps.
The update was officially announced by Google on August 6, 2026. Ask Maps can now help users order food, discover hotels, find events, check public transport delays, and even suggest changes to places through a simple conversation.
The update was also highlighted by local SEO expert Claudia Tomina in this LinkedIn post.
For local businesses, the update could be especially important. Google Maps is slowly moving from simply showing business information to using that information to take actions on behalf of users.
What Is Changing With Ask Maps?
Ask Maps uses Google’s Gemini AI technology to answer questions about places, businesses, routes, restaurants, events, and other real-world information.
However, the latest update takes things further.
Instead of only giving recommendations, Ask Maps can now help complete multi-step tasks. For example, a person can ask Maps to find a particular meal at a restaurant along their route and prepare the order for pickup.
Google says Ask Maps can find open restaurants, consider requirements such as dietary preferences, and even take a user’s saved places into account when looking for suitable options.
Once the user chooses a restaurant, Ask Maps can add the requested food directly to the shopping cart. The user can then review the order and complete the purchase.
Food ordering is currently rolling out with partners including Square and Toast, while Uber Eats support is expected to arrive later.
This changes the role Google Maps can play in a customer’s journey.
Previously, a customer might:
- Search for a restaurant
- Open its Google Business Profile
- Check reviews
- Visit its website
- Find the menu
- Place an order
Now, Ask Maps may help connect several of these steps in one conversation.
Saved Places Could Become More Important
One of the most interesting parts of the update is how Ask Maps uses saved places.
Google officially says its AI can consider places that a user has saved while completing requests such as finding food along a route.
Claudia Tomina highlighted this in her LinkedIn post and suggested that saved places may become increasingly important for agentic recommendations.
This does not mean Google has officially announced “saved places” as a traditional local ranking factor.
Still, the change could create a new goal for local businesses.
It may no longer be enough to simply get someone to discover your business. Encouraging customers to save your location could make it easier for Google Maps to consider that business during future personalized requests.
For local SEO teams, this gives another reason to think beyond rankings alone.
Visibility, engagement, accurate business information, customer preferences, and the overall usefulness of a listing may become increasingly connected.
Ask Maps Can Now Help Users Find Hotels
Restaurants are not the only businesses affected. Google is also expanding Ask Maps for hotel discovery.
For example, users can give Maps a detailed request asking for a hotel within a certain budget, with strong ratings, a particular atmosphere, and nearby amenities.
Ask Maps can compare real-time prices and check availability to help users narrow down their choices. This makes conversational search much more powerful.
Instead of searching multiple phrases such as “hotels near restaurants,” “hotels near gym,” and “best affordable hotels downtown,” users can describe everything they need in one request.
For hotels, this means complete and accurate online information could become even more important.
Business categories, amenities, location information, reviews, website content, pricing information, and nearby points of interest may all help Google understand which property fits a user’s request.
Local Events Get a Clearer Path to Ticket Purchases
Ask Maps can also help people discover nearby events.
Users can search for concerts, comedy shows, and other activities through a conversation. Google Maps can then provide relevant event information along with links that help users purchase tickets.
For businesses that organize events, this makes event information more valuable. Businesses should make sure important event details are easy for Google to understand, including:
- Event name
- Date and time
- Venue
- Location
- Ticket information
- Booking or purchase link
- Event description
Having a clear online path from discovery to purchase could become increasingly important as AI agents start helping users complete more tasks.
Google Maps Adds Real-Time Transit Delay Information
Google Maps already provides information about traffic, accidents, construction, and how busy certain places are.
Now, Ask Maps is getting stronger public transit information as well. Google has introduced a new transit experience that can show up-to-the-minute delays for buses, trains, subways, and ferries. For example, someone could ask Ask Maps about taking a ferry to a destination.
Maps can show the available options and update waiting times if the service is delayed. According to Google, those delays can update minute by minute.
This could make Ask Maps more useful for people making quick decisions while travelling. It could also indirectly affect nearby businesses.
For example, someone facing a train delay might ask Google Maps for:
- Coffee shops nearby
- Restaurants within walking distance
- Places to work for 30 minutes
- Stores near the station
- Things to do while waiting
As conversational Maps searches grow, businesses near transport locations may have more opportunities to appear during these highly specific searches.
Users Can Suggest Google Maps Edits Through Conversations
Another major change affects Google Maps contributions.
Google says users can now suggest edits conversationally through Ask Maps and the Contribute tab. Instead of navigating through several forms, a user could simply tell Maps about a change. Google even gives an example involving business hours.
A user can upload a photo of a storefront sign, and Google Maps can detect the updated opening hours from the image. Maps will then ask the user to confirm the information before submitting the suggested edit.
Users can also share local information through conversation.
For example, someone could tell Maps that additional parking is available behind a building. That information may later be shown to other users.
Google says suggested edits will still go through its protection systems before being published.
Why This Matters for Google Business Profiles?
The update makes accurate Google Business Profile information even more important.
In the past, people mainly looked at business listings to decide where to call, visit, eat, shop, or book. Now, AI may increasingly use that information while performing tasks.
That means businesses should regularly check important information such as:
- Business name
- Primary and secondary categories
- Opening hours
- Holiday hours
- Address
- Service areas
- Phone number
- Website
- Products
- Services
- Menu information
- Photos
- Booking options
- Event details
Incorrect information could create more problems when an AI system is trying to complete an action.
For example, incorrect opening hours could cause Maps to exclude a business from a request for something that is “open now.”
Similarly, missing ordering or booking options could make another business easier for an AI agent to recommend and use.
Personal Intelligence Is Coming to Ask Maps
Google is also bringing more personalization to Ask Maps through Personal Intelligence.
Users can choose to securely connect Gmail with Ask Maps. Google says Calendar and other apps will also be supported in the future. For example, Ask Maps could recognize that a person has a hotel reservation or upcoming flight in Gmail.
The user could then ask for activities near their hotel before the flight without explaining their entire travel plan again. Importantly, Google says connecting Gmail is turned off by default. Users have to choose to enable the connection.
Ask Maps can also remember previous conversations when the user’s history settings are enabled.
This means users may be able to continue travel planning, restaurant research, or local discovery conversations without starting again from the beginning.
Where Are the New Ask Maps Features Available?
The rollout depends on the feature.
Google says live transit information, personalized responses, and the ability to remember previous conversations are rolling out everywhere Ask Maps is available.
Meanwhile, food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are currently rolling out in the United States, with additional countries expected later.
Google is also expanding Ask Maps to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and more than 150 countries and territories in English.
What Should Local Businesses Do Now?
Local businesses do not need to completely change their SEO strategy because of one update.
However, they should start thinking about Google Maps differently.
Keeping a Google Business Profile complete and accurate has always been important. Now that AI can use business information while completing tasks, the quality of that information may matter even more.
Businesses should focus on:
- Keeping opening hours accurate
- Adding the correct categories
- Maintaining updated products and services
- Adding high-quality photos
- Keeping menus and ordering options current
- Making bookings simple
- Publishing event information clearly
- Checking business details regularly
- Making sure website information matches the Google Business Profile
The bigger shift is from optimizing only for visibility to also optimizing for action.
Google Maps Is Moving From Discovery to Action
Ask Maps is becoming much more capable.
Google Maps previously helped users answer questions such as “Where should I eat?” or “What is nearby?” Now it can move closer to completing the next step.
It can find the restaurant, consider preferences, add food to a cart, find an event, provide a ticket link, compare hotels, track transit delays, and collect updates about local places.
That is a significant change for local search. For businesses, a Google Business Profile is no longer only something customers may look at before visiting.
It is increasingly becoming structured business information that Google’s AI can use while helping customers make decisions and complete actions.
As agentic AI becomes more common inside Google Maps, businesses with accurate, detailed, and useful information are likely to be in a better position to benefit from this new type of local discovery.
