Google has updated its Manage customer reviews help documentation to clearly explain how business replies to reviews are handled. This update expands the section called Understand what happens to your replies and explains why a reply may be put on hold, how long reviews take, and what happens after approval.
The change was spotted by Hiroko Imai, who shared the update on LinkedIn:

According to Hiroko, this update is important because Google has clearly raised the status of review replies. Google now treats responses as official business information. These replies are not only read by people but are also reviewed and processed by AI. As a result, replies that do not follow Google policies may not be published.
What the updated section now says?
Google reviews your replies before publishing them. This helps ensure they follow Google content policies. If a reply is not approved, Google will ask you to edit it. Most replies are reviewed within 10 minutes, but in some cases, the process can take up to 30 days.
If your reply is approved, it is posted publicly under the customer review. It will appear as a business reply, and your personal name will not be shown.
After that, the customer who left the review receives a notification. Customers can still edit their review after reading your reply. If they do, the review date updates to show the latest change.

What the page said before?

Earlier versions of the page were much simpler. It only mentioned that replies might take time to appear publicly and that reviewers would be notified.
Previously, there was no clear explanation about policy checks, approval delays, or reply reviews by Google.
Why this update matters?
This change shows that Google now treats review replies as structured business content. For business owners using Google Business Profile, this means replies should be clear, helpful, and policy-compliant. Casual or careless responses may no longer be published.

Overall, this update is a reminder that review replies play a bigger role in trust, visibility, and how Google understands your business. Writing thoughtful and professional responses is now more important than ever.
