Google Business Profile Adds Report Owner Response Feature

Google Business Profile just rolled out a new option that flips the reporting process on its head. Until now, business owners had a way to flag reviews they felt were fake, misleading, or against Google’s policies. Now Google has given reviewers a similar tool called Report owner response, and it lets customers report a business owner’s reply if that reply breaks Google’s content rules.

This update was first spotted by GBP Product Expert Jacek N. Kozio, and it marks a meaningful shift in how Google is handling the back-and-forth between business owners and the people leaving reviews.

How the Report Owner Response Feature Works?

Repost Owner Response

The new option shows up in the same three-dot menu where reviewers already find Share review and Report review. If a business owner replies to a review, the reviewer can now tap Report owner response and choose a reason that best fits the issue.

Google currently lists five categories reviewers can select from:

  • Off topic: The owner’s reply doesn’t relate to an actual experience at or with the business
  • Profanity: The response includes swear words, sexually explicit language, or graphic violence
  • Bullying or harassment: The reply personally attacks a specific individual
  • Discrimination or hate speech: The response contains harmful language aimed at a person or group based on their identity
  • Personal information: The owner’s reply shares private details like a phone number or address

There’s also a separate path for reporting a legal issue, in case the situation goes beyond a simple content violation.

Why Google Introduced This Feature?

Anyone who manages a Google Business Profile has likely seen at least one situation where an owner’s reply crossed a line. In some cases, business owners have publicly shared a customer’s personal details in response to a negative review. In others, replies have included language that felt more like a personal attack than a professional response. When that happens, reviewers often end up deleting or editing their original review just to avoid further conflict, even if their feedback was completely valid.

The Report owner response option gives reviewers a direct way to flag the problem instead. Rather than removing their review to escape an uncomfortable reply, they can now report the response itself and let Google review it.

For local businesses, this update is a good reminder that owner replies aren’t a free-for-all. Google is treating them with the same level of scrutiny as reviews, and getting flagged for a policy violation could affect how a response, or even a profile, is treated going forward.

What This Means for Businesses Managing Their Google Profile?

If your business regularly responds to customer reviews, this update is worth paying attention to. A few practical takeaways:

Keep responses professional, even with negative reviews

Avoid oversharing details in public replies

Think before responding emotionally

Stay consistent with Google’s content policies

The Bigger Picture

This feature signals that Google wants both sides of the review conversation, the customer and the business, held to the same standard of respectful, on-topic communication. It also opens up a new question for local business owners and agencies: how will Google actually review these reports, and will the process work the same way it does for reported reviews?

For now, the safest approach is simple. Treat every owner response the way you would treat a public comment on social media, because that’s essentially what it is. A thoughtful, professional reply protects your reputation, while a careless one could now get reported and reviewed just like a bad review would.

Have you come across the Report owner response option yet on your own Google Business Profile? It’s a small addition, but one that could shape how businesses handle customer replies going forward.
