Many businesses are once again reporting that their Google reviews are disappearing or being removed. A similar issue happened last October and was later resolved in December. However, new complaints are now surfacing across forums.

Local SEO expert Joy Hawkins recently highlighted this issue. Although it is not affecting every business, the number of complaints appears higher than usual.
At the same time, Hiroko Imai suggested that this problem may be connected to recent updates in Google Business Profile review policies.
He mentioned that the updated policies could explain the sudden drop in reviews for some businesses.
What Businesses Are Reporting?
Many business owners are sharing serious concerns. Some say multiple reviews were removed within minutes. One report mentioned that 76 reviews disappeared from a single restaurant location. These reviews were posted over four years and included a mix of five star and lower star ratings.
Another business owner shared that real and genuine reviews were removed, not spam content. Some businesses received large volumes of reviews recently, only to see a major portion removed days later. For example, one business received 260 reviews in a week and later lost 100 of them. Their rating dropped by 0.2 points as a result.
Some new businesses are also affected. One owner explained that three five star reviews were removed, leaving behind only negative ratings. For small businesses with limited customers, this can create a major reputational challenge.
Additionally, a few users reported that the Reviews menu on Google Maps disappeared temporarily starting February 11.

Hiroko Imai pointed out certain lines in the updated Google Business Profile review policies that may explain the removals.
One key statement mentions content showing unusual volumes or patterns of review contributions that suggest rating manipulation.
Another important section states that merchants cannot:
Offer incentives such as payments, discounts, or free products in exchange for reviews
Discourage negative reviews
Selectively ask only happy customers for positive reviews
Pressure customers to leave reviews while on the premises
Google also warns against rating manipulation and fake engagement practices.
This suggests that Google may be using stronger filters to detect suspicious review behavior. If review patterns look unnatural, even legitimate reviews might be temporarily removed for further evaluation.
What This Means for Businesses?
At this point, Google has not issued a detailed public explanation about the spike in complaints. However, the timing suggests that policy enforcement may be stricter.
Businesses should focus on organic review collection. Avoid bulk review campaigns or sudden spikes in review requests. Encourage honest feedback from real customers and follow Google’s review guidelines carefully.
