Google has quietly updated the Google Business Profile verification flow, and this change could create serious issues for business owners who select the wrong option during setup.

This update was highlighted by Claudia Tomina on LinkedIn. In her post, she warned that the new verification process may become a trap for those who are not fully prepared.

According to Claudia, the options you choose in this new flow carry significant weight. In fact, selecting the wrong business type could increase your risk of compliance problems or even future suspension.

During the updated verification process, Google now asks: “What option best describes your business?” The available choices include:

• My business has a physical location for customers, like a restaurant or shop.
• My business has a physical location but travels to work at customers’ locations, such as a plumber or photographer.
• My business travels to meet customers without a staffed physical location, such as personal trainers or dog walkers.
• My business is an unstaffed facility where transactions can take place and contact information is available, such as ATMs and electric vehicle charging points.
• My business is online only.

At first glance, these options may seem simple. However, each selection can directly impact how your Google Business Profile is treated.

If you choose “My business is online only,” you may immediately disqualify your profile. Google Business Profile guidelines clearly state that online-only businesses are not eligible for a listing. Submitting this option could potentially lead to suspension.

The hybrid model option, which refers to businesses that have a physical location and also travel to customers, appears to represent a typical Service Area Business with a storefront. However, if your documentation does not perfectly match your selection, this could trigger a review process. In some cases, it may lead to your address being hidden or the profile being suspended.

Another important detail involves the staffing rule. If you select the option that states your business travels without a staffed physical location, Google may automatically categorize your profile as a hidden address Service Area Business. Google guidelines require that a location must be staffed during stated business hours in order to display the address publicly. Choosing incorrectly could change how your listing appears in Search and Maps.

The only apparent exception is the unstaffed facility option. ATMs and electric vehicle charging stations are allowed under specific conditions. These are rare cases where an unstaffed setup is acceptable under Google rules.

The main concern is that many small business owners may complete this new verification flow without fully understanding the long-term consequences of their selection. Once submitted, correcting mistakes can be difficult and may require additional documentation or appeals.

This update serves as a reminder that Google Business Profile verification is no longer just a simple setup step. It is now a critical compliance decision that can affect visibility, eligibility, and suspension risk.

Business owners and local SEO professionals should carefully review Google’s guidelines before selecting an option in the verification process. A small mistake today could impact your local rankings and profile stability in the future.
