Key findings

The 6 numbers that matter most.

The short version. Each card explains what the number means if you sell to other businesses.

95%

Deals won by a company that was already on the buyer’s first list of options.

What this means: If you are not on the first list, you almost never win. SEO helps you get on it.
2025 dataSurvey
61%

Share of the buying process done before the buyer contacts any seller. It was 69% a year before.

What this means: Buyers do most of their homework alone, online.
2025 dataSurvey
51%

Software buyers who now start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google. A year earlier it was 29%.

What this means: AI tools are now where many business buyers begin.
2026 dataSurvey
67%

Business buyers who would rather buy without talking to a sales rep. It was 61% before.

What this means: Your website has to answer questions a salesperson used to answer.
2026 dataSurvey
$164 vs $310

What this means: Leads from SEO cost about half as much as leads from ads.
2025 dataMeasured
87% vs 39%

Marketers who say AI made them faster, against those who say it made their content work better.

What this means: AI helps you make more content. It does not make it better by itself.

Buying

How business buyers decide.

6sense asked about 3,996 buyers. Their typical deal was worth $200,000 to $400,000.

How B2B buying works in 2025

Share of buyers or deals.

Deals won by a company on the first list95%
Buyers who rank their list before contacting anyone94%
First contact started by the buyer79%
Deals won by the company contacted firstabout 80%
Buyers who hired outside help76%
Buying process done before first contact61%

This changes what SEO is for. Most deals go to a company that was on the list before the buyer spoke to anyone. So the job of search is to get your name onto that first list of 3 or 4 companies. Buyers look at 5.1 companies on average and spend about 2 months with each.

Buying got a little faster this year. The average buying cycle fell from 11.3 months to 10.1 months. For context, a 2012 study by CEB and Google put the share of research done before contact at 57%. It went up to 69% and is now 61%.

You may see an older figure of “6 to 10 decision makers”. That comes from a 2017 Gartner survey and counts only people with a formal vote. Forrester’s 22 counts everyone who has a say. Both are useful. They just count different people.

AI research

How business buyers use AI.

G2 surveyed 1,076 business decision makers in North America, Europe and Asia in March 2026.

Use AI chatbots to research sellers60%71%

69%

Buyers who picked a different company than planned because of what AI told them.

What this means: AI can change a buyer’s mind late in the process.
2026 dataSurvey
33%

Buyers who bought from a company they had never heard of until AI suggested it.

What this means: AI can put a new name on the list. Make sure it can find yours.
2026 dataSurvey
94%

Buyers who fact-check what AI tells them. 63% used AI during the purchase.

What this means: Buyers check AI answers. Reviews and case studies must back up your claims.
2026 dataSurvey
38% vs 37%

Review sites against AI chatbots as the top influence on the buyer’s list.

What this means: Review sites are still just ahead of AI. Both matter now.
2026 dataSurvey

G2 also found that 64% of buyers often see wrong AI recommendations. 45% say a link to a review site is what makes them trust the answer again. So being mentioned by AI and having good reviews now work together. If you run an agency, a steady flow of client reviews helps with both.

Lead sources

Where B2B leads come from.

Sagefrog surveyed about 500 B2B marketers for its 2026 report. These are the marketers’ own answers.

Why does SEO rank low as a lead source? Buyers do most research before contacting anyone, and 95% of deals go to a company already on their first list. SEO often puts you on that list, but the lead is later credited to an email, event or directory. So SEO does its work early, where it is hard to track.

The same survey found 53% of marketers struggle most with the middle of the funnel, the stage where buyers compare options. Only 25% struggle most at the start. Just 35% say their sales and marketing teams are fully aligned.

Costs

What leads cost, and what converts.

These figures come from First Page Sage, one agency’s client data from 2018 to 2025. They are measured, not surveyed, but they come from one agency’s clients.

Keywords in the Ahrefs US database that get fewer than 10 searches a month. That is 2.3 billion keywords.

What this means: Most searches are small and specific. In B2B, that is where buyers are.
2026 dataMeasured

Fewer than 18,000 keywords get more than 100,000 searches a month. For a business with a small, specific market, many small keywords usually bring better buyers than one big keyword you cannot win.

Putting the numbers to work

What to do with these numbers.

6 steps for any company that sells to other businesses, including agencies.

1. Aim to be on the first list

95% of deals go to a company that was on the buyer’s first list. Your SEO goal is to be one of the 3 or 4 names a buyer writes down.

2. Make your claims easy to check

94% of buyers fact-check AI answers. Reviews, case studies and clear results pages help them trust you. For agencies, a white label reporting tool makes results easy to show.

3. Write for the comparison stage

53% of marketers struggle most with the middle of the funnel. Comparison pages, pricing pages and “how it works” pages help buyers who are choosing.

4. Expect SEO to look smaller in reports than it is

Most research happens before contact, so the first click often gets no credit. Track brand searches and assisted leads too. Our reporting tool can help agencies show this to clients.

5. Target many small keywords

About 93% of keywords get fewer than 10 searches a month. In B2B, 100 small, specific searches often beat 1 big one.

6. Check what AI says about you

33% of buyers bought from a company they first heard of through AI. Our AI visibility checker shows whether AI tools mention you.
