The AI companies report even bigger numbers. OpenAI said ChatGPT had 900 million weekly users in February 2026. Google said its AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026. But reach is not the same as use. SparkToro found that only 0.34% of Google searches in early 2026 happened in AI Mode.

Clicks

What AI Overviews do to clicks.

An AI Overview is the AI-written answer at the top of some Google searches. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords before and after AI Overviews appeared.

Drop in clicks when an AI Overview is shown

Change in click rate by Google position, December 2023 to December 2025.

Position 1-58.0%
Position 2-50.8%
Position 3-46.4%
Position 5-32.6%
Position 10-19.4%

The top result loses the most. One thing to keep in mind: keywords without an AI Overview also lost about half their clicks in the same period. So not all of this drop is caused by AI.

Pew also watched how 900 people really browsed. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a normal result on 8% of searches. Without one, they clicked on 15%. Only 1% of visits involved clicking a link inside the AI summary itself (Pew Research Center, July 2025).

The newest data shows clicks coming back. Seer Interactive followed 53 brands and 5.47 million searches. When an AI Overview was shown, the organic click rate was 1.31% in December 2025 and 2.36% in February 2026. That is a recovery of about 85% in 2 months.

Why being named in the AI answer matters.

Once an AI Overview appears, the one thing you can change is whether it mentions you. Seer Interactive measured clicks for every 1 million views on question searches.

Clicks per 1 million views on question searches

Full year 2025.

No AI Overview on the pageabout 33,500

AI Overview shown, your brand not namedabout 9,445

Being named gets you about 120% more clicks than not being named. It does not bring back everything. You still get about 38% fewer clicks than a page with no AI Overview at all.

Which pages get named? Two big studies give different answers. Ahrefs found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews were in the normal top 10 results in March 2026, down from 76% 7 months earlier. Another tracker, BrightEdge, found the overlap rising from 32% to 54%. The studies used different keywords and different ways of spotting citations, so both can be true for their own data.

AI visibility

What goes with being seen in AI answers.

Ahrefs looked at 75,000 brands and measured which signals move together with how often AI mentions a brand. A score of 1 would be a perfect match. 0 would be no link at all.

How strongly each signal tracks AI visibility

Correlation scores across 75,000 brands, December 2025.

YouTube mentions0.737
Brand mentions on the web (AI Mode)0.709
Brand mentions on the web (ChatGPT)0.664
Links using the brand nameup to 0.628
People searching the brand nameup to 0.466
Domain Rating (site authority)0.326
Number of pages on the site0.194

Being talked about matters more than site size or authority. Ahrefs itself says this shows a link, not a cause. Improving a signal will not automatically make AI mention you. But the pattern is clear.

For a local business, being talked about means reviews, local news, directories and community sites. Our AI visibility checker shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools mention your business today.

Local businesses

AI search and local businesses.

This is the part that matters most for shops, clinics, restaurants and service businesses.

Does AI replace the map results? Not for everything. Whitespark typed 540 local searches in 3 US cities by hand and recorded what showed up.

Type of searchExampleAI Overview shownMap results shown
Pure local“plumber near me”15%93%
Question“how long does an eye exam take”92%6%
Mixed“average cost of dental implants in Phoenix”97%17%
The map pack still wins “near me” searches. AI Overviews mostly answer the questions people ask before they choose, like cost and how long something takes. So keep your Google Business Profile strong for “near me” searches, and answer common questions on your website so AI can quote you.

One more finding from the same study: for plumber searches, 60% of AI Overview citations went to other websites like Reddit, Yelp and Thumbtack. Only 40% went to the plumbers’ own websites. Being listed and reviewed on the sites AI trusts helps you get mentioned.

Traffic and sales

Who lost traffic, and does AI traffic buy?

Change in Google traffic to websites, by size

December 2024 to December 2025. Site size by daily page views.

Small sites (1,000 to 10,000)-60%
Medium sites (10,000 to 100,000)-47%
Large sites (100,000 and up)-22%

Small websites lost the most Google traffic. But total page views across the same websites fell only about 6%. People still came, just through other routes like direct visits and links. AI chatbots sent under 1% of visits, even though ChatGPT visits grew more than 200% in a year.

Putting the numbers to work

What to do with these numbers.

6 practical steps, in order of how easy they are.

1. Ask AI about your business every month

Type your customers’ real questions into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Write down if you appear and what is said. Our AI visibility checker does this for you.

2. Answer the questions people ask before they buy

AI Overviews appear on 92% to 97% of question and cost searches. Put clear answers on your website, like prices, timings and how things work.

3. Get mentioned, not just linked

Brand mentions track AI visibility far better than site authority. Reviews, local press and trusted directories all count.

4. Keep your Google Business Profile strong

The map pack still shows on 93% of “near me” searches. A complete, active profile is still the base. Start with a free profile audit.

5. Report AI mentions next to rankings

Being named in an AI Overview brings about 120% more clicks than not being named. Track it every month like a ranking.

6. Keep your reviews fresh

82% of people read AI review summaries, and 77% still check real reviews. A steady flow of new reviews helps both. See our review management tool.
