The companies share even bigger numbers. OpenAI said ChatGPT had 900 million weekly users and 50 million paying subscribers in February 2026. Google said AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026.
Monthly users of the Gemini app in July 2026. Daily users tripled in a year.

How much traffic AI sends to websites.
AI tools send more visitors every month. It is still a small part of all traffic.
Growth in visits from AI tools, by industry
Change from June 2025 to May 2026.
ChatGPT sent 206% more visits to other websites than a year earlier, reaching about 170,000 different websites in February 2026. But 21.6% of those visits went to Google itself, and the top 10 websites got over 30% (Semrush).
In March 2025, Ahrefs looked at about 35,000 websites and found AI sent just 0.1% of their visits. Google sent 345 times more than ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini put together. The gap has narrowed since then, but AI is still under 1% of all traffic.
Do visitors from AI buy?
Adobe measures over 1 trillion visits to US shopping websites.
AI visitors compared with other visitors
US retail websites, July 2026.
This changed quickly. In March 2025, AI visitors bought 38% less often than other visitors. By July 2026 they bought 60% more often. July was the 11th month in a row that AI visitors did better.
Similarweb measured something close to this on its own data: AI visitors converted 54% better by May 2026. Two separate sources pointing the same way makes the finding stronger.
How people ask AI tools questions.
A prompt is what you type into an AI tool. Semrush studied real ChatGPT use in the US.
| What was measured | Early 2025 | February 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Average prompt length when ChatGPT searches the web | 4.7 words | 8.7 words |
| Average prompt length when it does not search | 24.9 words | 13.5 words |
| Prompts that look like normal Google searches | 18.9% (October 2025) | 34.9% |
| Prompts where ChatGPT turns on web search | 46% (late 2024) | 34.5% |
Many AI chats are not searches at all. A study by OpenAI and NBER of 1.5 million ChatGPT conversations found practical advice (28.3%), writing help (28.1%) and looking for information (21.3%) make up nearly 80% of use. Over 70% of messages were not about work.
More people use AI search, but trust is falling.
Fractl and Search Engine Land asked 1,008 US consumers in 2026, and compared with 2025.
| What people said | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| AI search is more helpful than normal search | 82% | 54% |
| AI search is less helpful | 3% | 17% |
| Heavy AI use by a brand makes me trust it less | 20% | 39% |
At the same time, 70% say they use AI search more than last year. Only 3% use it less. So use is going up while trust goes down. Among Gen Z, 54% say heavy AI use would make them trust a brand less. Between 84% and 91% of people want brands to say when content is made with AI. Only 20% of marketers always do.
When buying, people still lean on familiar places: Google 39%, Reddit 15% and AI tools 14%. For local businesses, 74% still go to Google first.
Which websites AI tools quote.
Profound studied about 730,000 ChatGPT conversations in late 2025.
Chance of a citation, by reply number in a chat
Share of ChatGPT replies that include a source, October to December 2025.
The first question matters most. A first reply is about 4 times more likely to cite a source than the 20th.
A small number of websites get most citations. Wikipedia alone gets 5% of all ChatGPT citations and appears in 18% of conversations. Reddit gets 3% and appears in 13%. Overall, ChatGPT cited a source on only 6.8% of US desktop answers in May 2026 (Similarweb). For professional services it was under 4%.
AI search and local businesses.
BrightLocal asked 1,002 US adults in early 2026 how they find local businesses.
Used AI to find a local business in the past year, up from 6%.

Trust AI tools to recommend a business.
Still check what the AI tells them, by looking at star ratings and full reviews.
82% read AI summaries of reviews. 59% use them as a starting point and then check the full reviews. Only 23% trust the summary alone. So AI is where many people start their shortlist, and your reviews and Google Business Profile help close the deal.

What to do with these numbers.
6 simple steps for any business.
1. Judge AI by sales, not visits
AI sends under 1% of traffic, but those visitors buy 60% more often on retail sites. Report it as a small, high-value channel.
2. Win the first question
ChatGPT is most likely to cite a source in its first reply. Think about the first question your customers ask, and answer it clearly on your website.
3. Be present where AI looks
Sites like Wikipedia and Reddit get many citations. For a local business, trusted directories, local press and reviews are the places to be seen.
4. Check your local answers every month
45% of people use AI to find local businesses. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your service and area, or use our AI visibility checker.
5. Say when you use AI
84% to 91% of people want AI content to be labelled, and 39% trust brands less for heavy AI use. Being open costs nothing.
6. Keep Google strong
For local businesses, 74% of people still go to Google first. A complete Google Business Profile is still the base of everything.
